The forsythia bushes were acting oddly this fall: They were blooming here and there throughout November and into December. (So was the ornamental holly, for that matter, and the silver maple buds looked full to bursting. A friend in Ohio also noted late-fall blooming forsythia. What the—?!) I decided to bring in a few branches of the forsythia, recalling from a college Wren nests in...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17892263703645385206noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4148652329299229601.post-14539833061349634342014-12-02T14:57:00.004-05:002014-12-03T11:46:22.113-05:00Bit of Color for a Dreary Day...
Time to catch up with a big backlog of photos and get this blog up and running again!
As it is a typical gray, cold, wet, miserable "winter" (still a few weeks off the solstice astronomically speaking, I know, but close enough) day here in Southernmost New Jersey, I feel a splash of color is in order. (Already, you ask? Aye and oi--'tis going to be a long, slow, grueling slog to get even halfWren nests in...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17892263703645385206noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4148652329299229601.post-84475144557503360382014-08-23T14:32:00.000-04:002014-12-02T14:58:27.072-05:00Shuttered.
I admit it: I have a thing for shutters. Especially exterior ones that really work. Lucky for me, living in an area that has seen European settlement for the past 300 years means there are a goodly number of extant shutters. Most are so layered in decades of paint I doubt they actually work anymore (given the increasing frequency of hurricanes, the home owners might want to look into that...) (More spiders!)The spiders in my yard this year are killing me. So many, so fantastic! I don't know if I'm spending more time looking or if the yard is now mature enough to support them. Probably both.

How can you not love this face?
To continue with examples of the serendipitous way my life works, out of the blue the other day I decided to see if I could get the sliding screen door either back on its track or figure out a way to hinge it. (It's been lying on its side tucked away on the deck for years...) Ten minute snapshot of my life... In snapshots.
How things work in my life: I went out to pick up some bamboo tips from where I'd tossed them last year because I finally figured out a use for them. Saw a wee snail in a patch of fantastic light, thought it would make a neat picture. Went for the camera, snail was cruising and had nearly managed to get out of sight by the time I made it backWren nests in...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17892263703645385206noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4148652329299229601.post-66710067543701501282014-06-24T14:24:00.004-04:002014-06-24T14:24:39.072-04:00Let there be light...
Physics fascinates me even though I don't understand most of it. I did quite well in those classes, mind you--mostly because I knew which numbers to plug into which formulas. But to this day all I really know is that you flip the switch, the light goes on. Somehow.
Speaking of lights, I really wish I'd been able to study light more in physics class. Click to bigify all photos--these wee flowers (~1/2") are worth a closer look.
Just holding the plants up and together; they got a bit leggy and top-heavy.
What’s in a name? Not too much in this case... Blue-eyed Grass does have a flower that is blue, but the “eye” is not (I wouldn't call it "eyed", either) and it isn’t even a grass. It’s actually an itty bitty iris! Doesn’t everyone put out a water dish for their yard lizards? Well, why not? It works. (Okay, I suppose you do have to have a healthy population of Five-lined Skinks in your yard for it to work as well as this...)
(It would have been wonderful if these first photos were in focus but I was lucky to get them, the skink was moving so quickly. Taking advantage of the fact we are (much to my surprise) having a Real Spring, I purposefully went on a wander earlier this week with my new Lensbaby system--a set of creative lenses that basically do special effects in-camera (saving hours of time at the computer messing around with an image editing program that I don't really know how to use anyway).

And this is why I don't pick up most bugs by hand. I used a stick to fish this creature out of a pot of rainwater. Just look at those choppers!
It's a new one for me: Rove Beetle. According to Bug Guide.net, the genus for this beastie is Platydracus -- "flat dragon". I really love the Latin binomial system sometimes...
