Whoa...

And this is why I don't pick up most bugs by hand. I used a stick to fish this creature out of a pot of rainwater. Just look at those choppers!


It's a new one for me: Rove Beetle. According to Bug Guide.net, the genus for this beastie is Platydracus -- "flat dragon". I really love the Latin binomial system sometimes...



The wings are typically tucked up under the "elytra" (hard wing covers on a beetle) but this one has them fully extended...
